STARR, Belle

(1848–1889)
Probably the most famous woman outlaw of them all, Belle Starr rode with the Younger and the Jesse James gangs, mothered Cole Younger’s child, and carried herself perfectly well with the men. At least that is the way most cinema Westerns portray her. She operated out of Indian Territory and had a hideout in what today is called Robbers Cave in Oklahoma. Gene Tierney played the bandit queen in Belle Starr(1941), opposite Randolph Scott. The real Belle Starr died in action in 1889.
